A resident of a care home in Basildon, Essex, recently celebrated a very special birthday. Florence Ponti (Flo) celebrated her 100th birthday at Mundy House care home with a tea party surrounded by her family, residents and staff of the home.

Flo was born in 1922 in Southwark, London. She is one of six children. After leaving school, she trained as a court dressmaker with Norman Hartnell, a British fashion designer who was best known for designing dresses for the royal family.

When World War II broke out, Flo was called up to join the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, where she worked in many different roles to help with the war effort. After the war, she returned to her roots as a seamstress working until she finally retired at the age of 75.

Flo met and married Joseph Ponti and had four children, two boys and two girls. The family lived in Tufnell Park, North London before moving to Romford in the 1950s and then to Basildon in 1964 where the family eventually settled.

Sadly, Flo lost her husband in 2003 after a long and happy marriage. She now has 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. Flo lived her life to the fullest, surrounded by her ever-growing family.

Flo loves being in the garden enjoying cross stitch and lots of embroidery. At 90, she joined a local art club where she acquired another talent in watercolor. In her later years, she took up crossword puzzles and word searches, she will rarely sit idly by.

Flo said: ‘I was really looking forward to celebrating my 100th birthday and getting a card from the Queen. I was so thankful for all the effort the house staff put in for my birthday party.

Josi George, care home manager, said: “Flo is a pleasure to be with, she really enjoys keeping busy and participating in the care home activities. We all had a lovely day celebrating her birthday with tea and cake.
