Chester care home celebrates platinum jubilee with 1950s theme

RESIDENTS of a Chester nursing home enjoyed a platinum jubilee celebration fit for a queen.

Care UK’s Deewater Grange on Chester Road marked the official milestone of the Queen’s 70th birthday by inviting family and friends to a 1950s-themed street party. The house, which provides full-time residential care, dementia care and nursing, hoped to evoke happy memories of past royal celebrations.

The garden was decorated with Union Jack flags, streamers and balloons. Guests were treated to a Jubilee-themed barbecue, as well as classic treats such as sandwiches, sausage rolls, cheese and pineapple sticks, as well as Jubilee’s signature platinum pudding, lemon and trifle amaretti, specially prepared for the occasion by the chef of the house.

Visitors and residents also engaged in friendly competition by playing traditional party games including ring toss, bowl and tin can aisle, and decorating their own wreaths.

Sally Cooper, Home Manager at Deewater Grange, said: “We had a wonderful time celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

“For older people and those living with dementia, reminiscing on key milestones, such as previous Jubilee celebrations, can help bring back happy memories, as well as spark conversation and connection with those around them. These positive feelings gained from revisiting good memories can help reduce stress, reduce restlessness, and improve mood.

“We have many royalists here at Deewater Grange, including Marie Bentley who was keen to mark the Queen’s incredible reign and celebrate in style. Everyone had a fantastic time, and we are already planning our next royal lap! ”

Marie Bentley, 91, who met the Queen during her teaching career, had wanted to recreate a Jubilee street party as one of her memories involved a street party to celebrate the end of the war.

Marie said: “Meeting the Queen was a great honour, and the feeling when everyone came together to celebrate the end of the war was incredible.”
