Maple Ridge Nursing Home Abuse Allegations Lead to Complaints – Maple Ridge News

Allegations of abuse at a Maple Ridge seniors’ facility are the backdrop for a disciplinary hearing for a nurse.

The BC College of Nurses and Midwives will hold a hearing into alleged professional misconduct against Licensed Practical Nurse Barbara (Trish) Berg.

Berg is not accused of committing abuse, but of failing to report it.

According to a quote on the college’s website, on December 25 and 27, 2020, a health care aide told Berg that she witnessed the mistreatment of residents of Maple Ridge Seniors Village. Hailey Barker told Berg she saw another caregiver punch the resident and choke him.

The allegation states that Berg did not report the abuse to the management team or prepare a reportable incident form.

The citation states that a few days later, on December 27, orderly Allyson Davies reported abuse involving the same resident. Davies said she saw another caregiver put an electric razor in the resident’s mouth in an attempt to silence him. Again, Berg reportedly neither reported this to management nor prepared an incident form.

The citation said that from January to August 2021, Berg failed to respond to college inquiries “in a timely, complete, and substantial manner with respect to the investigations against you.” It lists some 18 attempts to contact her by phone and email.

There have been no official findings of wrongdoing on Berg’s part.

Bianca Goldberg, executive director of Maple Ridge Seniors Village, said neither Berg nor the caregiver who allegedly abused a resident are currently employed at the nursing home.

As soon as management learned of the allegations, they informed Fraser Health and the family of the resident involved and launched their own investigation, she said.

“We took all appropriate and immediate action,” Goldberg said. “We have no tolerance for abuse or neglect.”

Goldberg said she could not comment further on the incidents.

The hearing is scheduled for May 11 and 12 in Vancouver.
