Southampton Vauxhall showroom could be replaced with a care home

A SOUTHAMPTON showroom and car shop could be transformed into more than 60 assisted living apartments and a four-story care home if the plans were approved by city leaders.

The UK’s leading retirement home developer McCarthy Stone has submitted a request to Southampton City Council regarding plans to replace the Doves Vauxhall showroom and workshops on The Avenue.

It details the proposals for a two- to four-storey apartment building containing 66 assisted living apartments as well as a four-storey care home that can accommodate 80 people.

The existing buildings would be demolished to make way for the proposed development.

The Daily Echo has contacted Vauxhall for comment on the plans, but they have not responded.

The proposal aims to erect a block of supportive housing, which, according to the developers, would provide the opportunity for “high-quality development” which “would positively contribute” to meeting the specialized accommodation needs of the elderly.

This block would approach the frontage of Avenue and Chemin Bannister.

It is also proposed to erect a care home to be located on the front of Bannister Road.

McCarthy and Stone Management Services Limited is registered as a home care agency with the Quality of Care Commission, which is a legal requirement to provide “care” to individuals.

McCarthy and Stone Management Services will manage the housing with assistance.

Care UK, the likely developer of the care home, is one of the largest providers of residential care for the elderly.

Care UK operates 124 nursing homes providing both residential and nursing care. Their team of 10,000 provides care to approximately 7,000 residents every day.

The proposal would be located close to local businesses and services, including access to the city center.

The specifications read: “The proposed use would be in line with the government’s housing and sustainable development policies in that it would meet the accommodation needs of the elderly, thus freeing the existing under-occupied stock. .

“In this context, in the case of the MS element nationwide, approximately 45 percent of residents of retirement housing (Category II) come from within a five mile radius (approximately 72 percent within a radius of 20 miles).

“It is expected that a similar profile will be presented in the case of additional care residents offered for assisted living and the nursing home. ”
